choked up too and the store so empty and dark and the piano sounding so tired and yet pushing ahead and ahead to the end. But now I was sitting and listening to about sixty men and they were all playing different things and it was all so fine.
And so Jenny just went on in her quiet sort of scared way and sometimes Beatty would look at her and say Jenny I wonder if you're an angel or just plain dumb. Jenny was never unhappy and she wasn't full of plans like Beatty. She just liked to keep busy doing little things and she kept Beatty's things tidy like she kept her own because Beatty wasn't tidy. One time she was fixing Beatty's stocking and Beatty said to her Jenny what do you think about when you're darning stockings and Jenny looked up at her and she said nothing I just rest. Beatty said it was a waste of time to fix and mend that we ought to save our time for using our intellect. But I haven't any intellect Jenny said. So then Beatty ran over to her and kissed her and said that's right you haven't any intellect and you'll just grow up like mama nice and sweet and all you'll get for your pains will be trouble and brats like me.
Jenny was changing a lot these days. She was eighteen now and she was getting kind of rounder and not so scrawny and sort of prettier and one day she came home from work and she said Mr. Cooper-that was Jenny's boss-asked me to ask
