Mothers Cry

Seventeen
THE two girls graduated high school together because Beatty did get through in three years like she said she would but she had to work awfully hard to do it.
Jenny was only sixteen and I didn't like to see her going to work but she said that's what she took the commercial course for and she got a job in a printing shop being a stenographer. It was only a little shop with just the boss and a man to help him and Jenny was only a beginner but she got ten dollars a week. After a while Jenny said she liked it because her boss was very kind and wasn't a bit hard and lots of times when things were slack he. let her go home at five o'clock instead of half past five. And after three months she got a raise to eleven dollars a week and she said her boss told her he liked her because she was so quiet and modest and did her work so nicely.

So she was terribly tired when she came home and I asked her please not to do it but she said somebody in the family had to make up for Danny and she said it so bitterly I didn't answer her.
