Then the policeman came from the other side and I stood back close to the wall so he wouldn't see me. When he walked into the store everybody got kind of quiet about how wonderful they were and sort of smiled kind of like they were trying to be friendly but they looked sort of foolish like they were saying to themselves don't let the other fellers see how scared you are of the cop just make believe you don't care. After the policeman went out again they all began talking again and laughing and telling more stories how smart they were.
I couldn't stand it any more because I don't know why but I began to feel sorry for them. They were all afraid of something inside themselves and they all wanted everybody else to think they weren't afraid and they all felt like they weren't really much good but they all wanted everybody.to think they really thought they were wonderful and I don't know it made me want to cry like sometimes I wanted to cry when the children were little and they talked about fairy stories like they were real and all the boys and the men in the pool room seemed like little children that couldn't tell what was real and they were so full of the picture of how they wanted life to be that they couldn't see life like it was.
A man came out then and I asked him to please send Danny out but when Danny came out he was terribly mad at me and he told me to go home right away or he wouldn't come home at all because he wasn't a baby any more and I had no right to come after him he could take care of himself.
So I went home alone and Danny didn't come home until two o'clock in the morning.
And it got to be the same way all the time. Except sometimes he didn't come home till it was nearly daytime. When I asked him where he was he said shut up or lemme alone. He
