Mothers Cry

I said I would try to do my best to send Artie to college and Mr. Robinson said he would train him to take examinations so he would get a scholarship at Columbia and that if ever Artie needed money he would be glad to lend it to him because he didn't have any family of his own and all his ambitions now weren't much good to him but maybe they would be good for Artie.
After Mr. Robinson went away Artie ran up to the attic and he stayed there all afternoon. I think he was just too excited and happy and he was maybe a little bit ashamed because he was.
One morning I heard the mailman whistle at our door but when I got there Danny was just closing our box and he said it wasn't anything ma just an ad for me. Then about a week later the same thing happened and I noticed Danny never left for school any more until after the mailman came and I said Danny won't you be late and he said oh no my program was changed and my first class doesn't come until ten o'clock. Then one afternoon the mailman whistled and I went to the box and it was a letter for me. In the corner was printed Office of the Secretary Stuyvesant High School. I opened the letter and it said Dear Madam Since your son Daniel Williams has not been attending school since February 12th we have come to the conclusion that he has dropped his studies. Will you please see that all his books are returned immediately or we shall be obliged to take unpleasant action. We are sorry to have to assume this attitude but as this is our third communication and we have not had the courtesy of a reply we feel that this matter is not receiving proper attention. Very truly yours.
