A FEW years passed all about the same. Artie was in 5A and so was Danny because Danny was left back again and so Artie got up to him. Jenny was in 3A and Beatty was in zA.
I was always having to come to school about Danny. He wasn't very smart and he was always in trouble. But Artie always got A A A on his report card A for Effort and A for Efficiency and A for Deportment. The teachers all liked Artie and said he could draw wonderful and that he was the best in the class in everything. They all belonged to the public
library on Boston Road except Danny and Artie would get a new book nearly every day but he read mostly books on how to make things and he built a little electric motor out of the odds and ends he found in the cellar and other little things. Once he came home with a little puppy and he asked me if he could keep it. I said yes but out in the yard so he went around to the grocery store and he asked for some empty boxes and he took them all apart and used the boards to make a house for the puppy. They were beginning to build such a lot of houses all around now and Artie asked the workmen to let him have some tar paper and he put it all over the house so neat and it was a lovely dog house.
Artie was just as big as Danny now because Danny was kind of small for his age and Artie was kind of large and I heard Artie tell Danny that if he ever touched his puppy or his house he would knock hell out of him. Oh Artie I said you mustn't say such words but Artie said you have to talk that way to Danny.
