Mothers Cry

Twelve
MR. ROSENS the lawyer said the best he could get was three thousand dollars and that left two thousand dollars for me. Then Mr. Landry wrote me a letter and asked me to come to see him. When I got there he said the firm had decided to give me two hundred and fifty dollars and then he said what did I think I was going to do. So I told him I didn't know but I thought maybe I'd try to get a shop like mama's. But he said no he had a better idea. He said now they had built the new subway to the Bronx that values would surely be going up there and he said I ought to buy a house because that way I would always have a roof over my head and besides the house and the land would be worth a whole lot more in ten years. Then he asked me what I could do so I said nothing much except keep house and sew a little so he said that was just the thing. I'd have my house and then I could take sewing to do to pay for food and clothes.
When I told mama she said it would be crazy to live away up there it was nothing but a wilderness and besides people would get terrible sicknesses from riding in the new subway because it wasn't natural but I went up with Mr. Landry on Sunday anyway and I was a little bit disappointed because it was so quiet and kind of lonely but I thought it would be nice for the children to have the empty lots to play in and after we looked around Mr. Landry decided on a house that was on Tinton Avenue right across the way from a big school and I thought that would be fine for the children too because the school looked so nice and clean and new.
The house was in a long row of houses all close together
