Mothers Cry

And while the box was going down I kept seeing how the black had all rubbed off the buttons from jenny's and Beatty's shoes and I wished mama hadn't blacked the tops because now the shoes looked awful and I knew I would have to take the white buttons off and sew black ones on and I felt so tired already and it made me feel so much more tired to think of having to sew on those buttons.
When it was over there was the long drive home again and the children fretted and nagged so because they were so tired and Beatty had black circles under her eyes. Danny wanted me to stop the carriage and buy him candy and when I wouldn't he said he could at least have what he wanted on the day of his father's funeral. Jenny whimpered because Cousin Liz had told her she would never see her daddy any more and she asked me if it was so and I had to tell her it was.
Mama had made sandwiches for us to come home to and Mrs. Schwartz had the table all ready the beer and olives and coffee and some brandy for the men and the men got to drinking and saying what a fine fellow Frank was.
I gave the children their supper and we put their beds back in the parlor and I put them to bed but pretty soon I heard a loud scream and it was Beatty. The excitement upset her stomach and she was throwing up dreadfully. So I had to change her whole bed over again and sing her a song to quiet her.
Then everybody went home and mama went home and I looked at the children to see they were all covered and lying comfortably and I undressed and I went to bed. It was such a big bed for me to sleep in alone.
