Mothers Cry

and my hands were like ice and all the way in the elevated I Telt so cold.
When we got to the hospital the policeman went over to a nurse and he talked to her for a while and then the nurse came over to me and said come with me so I went with her and we walked down a long hall and she opened one of the doors and there in the middle of the room was something on a high table all covered over and the nurse was saying to me now you must be brave my dear and then I don't know what happened but I was smelling something like ammonia and I was all soaking wet with sweating but feeling so cold all the time and I was sitting in a chair and there was Frank lying dead in front of me on the high white table. I threw myself on him and I kept crying Frank Frank Frank Frank and I thought I was dying because I couldn't stand it and then I was in another room and I was lying down and they were putting warm things on me and somebody was saying now drink this my dear there now drink this.
Then they asked me what should they do with Frank so I said I wanted them to bring him home and they put him in a long basket in the ambulance and I rode home with him.
When we got to the door all the children from the block ran to see like they always do when they hear the ambulance bell and all the neighbors put their heads out of the windows and there in the crowd waiting to see what was coming out of the ambulance were Danny and Artie and Jenny and Beatty. I got out first and the children ran to me. They were all so scared so I told them to run upstairs but they wanted to see and then they carried the basket out of the ambulance and upstairs and I went afterwards with the children but one of the men tripped on the oilcloth in the hall and the sheet moved and Jenny said oooh it's papa it's papa it's papa's
