I somehow couldn't think he was so bad as he showed himself. Once he said to me ma I'm goin to grow up and have a lot of money and I'll give it all to you just wait and see. But meantime I had to hide my pocketbook away all the time because if I didn't Danny would take pennies by himself.
They had lots of fights the two boys. Especially about running errands for me. They were supposed to take turns but when it was Danny's turn he would run away and Artie would have to go again. The girls weren't hard to manage only Beatty was such a poor eater and I think it was because she liked me to pay attention to her all the time. I would go crazy trying to get her to eat and sometimes I would get so mad the way she played with her food that I would slap her and then I would cry and she would cry and I think she used to like it when we cried like that together but I would be all worn out.
That year Jenny got the whooping cough and Beatty caught it too and the Board of Health made me keep Artie and Danny home from school and I had all the children on my hands. Jenny would whoop so I thought she was going to choke and Beatty got worse about eating and I had to sit down with her and tell her stories or Frank would make funny faces. And all the time I knew she was just doing it to tease me and to get attention.
Jenny got better after a while. She was always such a good little thing.
