Mothers Cry

Mama was waiting for me upstairs like always and while I was eating the bread and ham and milk I told her about the engagement and she was so glad she cried a little. Mama always cries a little when she's happy and so do I too. She said she was so glad to hear the news tonight of all nights because Aunt Kate's Gussie had run away with an actor from the Academy of Music and she was so glad I wasn't Gussie's kind but then Aunt Kate had been a wild one too but I was too young to know about such things and it was better I shouldn't and even if Aunt Kate was her own sister all she could say was like mother like daughter. Then mama said not to tell papa about Gussie because whenever mama and papa had any trouble especially about papa going down to the corner so much he always brought things up like that. And mama said not that there weren't plenty of wild ones in papa's family too his uncle for instance who ran away with his partner's money and his buggy but it wasn't any use giving papa more excuses to go down to the corner. But mama said Frank Williams is going to make a wonderful husband as he proved by his deed today.
I was so tired that night from working so hard and from all the excitement I didn't have any time to think before I was fast asleep. But some nights it was lovely to lie and just think of all the beautiful life we were going to have together. I used to think how I would always try to be a good wife to him and if only I was a good wife I would always be happy. Well I was always a good wife to Frank: He said so often and often. He said it the morning of the day he died even. But Danny happened just the same.
We started getting things ready for the party right away. I asked the girls on my floor and Frank asked some of the men in his department and some of the men from his club.
