Mothers Cry

Four
IT GOT to be December and oh how we began to work at Landry's. All day long the store was so crowded with customers and we worked until ten o'clock every night. Frank never had any time any more to talk to me. He would just
say will you hurry this through Miss Knight the customer is waiting and I would say yes Mr. Williams. I always did his slips first ahead of everybody else's. One day the supervisor came over to me with a customer and he said madam says she has been waiting twenty minutes for her package and her change what is holding it up. I said I was sorry I was doing the best I could and just then Frank passed by my desk and the customer said to the supervisor that's the man who waited on me. But I knew I didn't have any of Frank's slips because I always put his through first. So I said I haven't any slip for this customer and then she got very mad and the supervisor called over Frank.
Frank said yes he had put the sales slip through and he had put the money on my desk pinned together with the slip. It was five dollars and the sale was for four dollars and sixty three cents. I looked for it high and low and the supervisor was getting very angry with me and the customer was saying all kinds of things and I began to cry because my desk was getting all filled up with other slips and everybody was looking at me so cross. Then Frank leaned over my desk as if he was looking for the slip and he whispered to me don't cry Mary I'll fix it up. So he turned to the customer and the supervisor and he said maybe he had left the slip on his counter and he would look again in his sales book too to make sure and pretty soon
