Mothers Cry

And little by little I tried calling him Frank and sometimes I could do it quite easily if I didn't stop to think about it.
Frank was just perfect in everything and he was always the same to me good and kind. Papa used to ask him sometimes to go down with him to the corner to have beer or something and Frank always said he never minded what other people did but for him he just didn't care for it. And he would pat papa on the back and say have a good time old sport when papa went down alone. But Frank liked to smoke cigars and he liked to play billiards. He liked all kinds of games and he always said he wished I would like them too. He belonged to a club and they had two rooms downtown. They played ping pong there and Frank showed me how to play it on the dining room table and I thought it was fun. They played cards too but not for money at least most of the men didn't play for money but some did.
And mama said now I was keeping company I must look like a grown up young lady and she bought me a beautiful hat. It had three feathers on it and a big bow with wire inside so the bow would stand up. And mama showed me how to fix my hair in a pompadour so my hat would stay on nice and high. She bought me a set of combs with little flowers painted on them for my hair and Frank bought me two beautiful hat pins and they had little birds at the ends. Mama made me a new dress and it had eight gores in the skirt and a high collar. I didn't like the collar because it wasn't very comfortable on account of the bones always sticking in my neck and besides I had to change the ruching around the neck nearly every day. And all the time I felt everything was so wonderful and I was so happy and I wished that keeping company would never stop.
