Mothers Cry

cause they were making stains on the pages. So I took a few and I wrapped them in tissue paper and I kept them in my drawer.
It was lovely keeping company because now I had somebody to take me places. One time we went to a big hall and a man talked to us all about Africa and he had a magic lantern and the most wonderful pictures. They were colored to look like real and some of the animals were beautiful but I didn't like the pictures of the people who lived there because they looked so queer and they didn't wear clothes. And one time we played croquet in Central Park. And one time he took me to a minstrel show. It was called Pell's minstrels and it was so funny. But I wouldn't try riding a bicycle. Mr. Williams said I would be perfect if only I would ride tandem with him because riding a bicycle was such fun. But I couldn't help it that I was afraid of it. Mama even said she would make me a skirt for it and Mr. Williams said yes and then we could use it for ice skating in the winter and to make it short so it wouldn't get tangled up in the skates and mama said yes they were putting lead weight taping on the bottoms of the shorter skirts so they would stay down around the ankles but I began to cry and said no please no and so they let me alone. But that was the only thing that ever came between Mr. Williams and me all the time we were keeping company. One time we took the elevator all the way out to the end and we went walking in the woods and we stopped at a farmhouse and had milk and cookies. And then after that they opened a zoo up in Bronx Park and we went up there twice because it was cleaner and nicer than the one in Central Park and there was a place there too where you could go on the river and there were hardly no people and we could talk so quietly and friendly.
