Mothers Cry

slip and Mr. Williams would write a little note on this little piece of paper and when he gave me his sales slip it would drop on the desk. It was just like talking. He would write something like now give me a smile or I'm thinking of you or do you remember Sunday and I would have to make change and all just as if he hadn't said anything at all. It was so romantic I thought that we should both always have to pretend we weren't anything to each other at all when we were really such good friends.
Fanny Benson told the other girls on our floor and everybody was always teasing me just to see me get red and hot all over. But Mr. Williams said I mustn't care because they were only jealous.
When Mr. Williams came the next Sunday I could see that something was going to happen because he winked at mama when he thought I wasn't looking and I saw mama moving her lips like she was asking him a question and Mr. Williams shook his head like he was saying yes yes.
When we went to sit in the parlor Mr. Williams said I want you to shut your eyes and give me your hands and I thought he was so original to say that because they always say shut your eyes and open your mouth. So I shut my eyes and I held out my hands and I felt him doing something to my fingers and he said now open your eyes and I opened them and I saw that I was wearing a ring.
It's only a friendship ring Mr. Williams said and it's to show that we'll always be friends and some day I hope that we'll be more than just friends. Then he took my hands in his hands and he kissed them and I thought I couldn't bear it because I was so happy and I wanted to cry and it seemed so silly to want to cry. The ring was a gold ring with a little gold heart and in the middle of the heart was a tiny red stone.
