Mothers Cry

some of them would be near the stoop when I came in with Mr. Williams so they could see me coming home with him because he was so wonderful and fine.
Yes Mary Mr. Williams said strong men have to protect timid shy girls and you can always count on me.
And sure enough just as we were going up the steps two of the boys from the block were standing there and they looked so sort of young and small standing there and their clothes looked funny along side of Mr. Williams' Sunday suit. I was so proud and happy.
We had a cold supper because it was Sunday night and afterwards Mr. Williams' said you must leave me alone with your mother because I have a secret with her. And so I cleared up the dishes and washed them while mama and Mr. Williarns were having their secret in the parlor. They came back into the kitchen after me and they were both smiling and seemed pleased.
The next Sunday we went to Coney Island and we had a lovely time only Mr. Williams teased me because I wouldn't try to learn how to ride a bicycle and he said I couldn't hurt myself because they had a net over the back wheel of ladies' bicycles so we wouldn't catch our skirts but I was afraid to try. So he hired one for himself and I sat on a bench and watched him ride it for a while but he said it was no fun riding alone and then he said would I try a tandem but I said no please no. So he laughed and he kept singing all the way home in the car I can't afford a carriage but you'll look sweet on the seat of a bicycle built for two and he kept on saying that I'd have to learn how.
At the store it was getting nicer all the time. Mr. Williams began sending me notes in such a funny way. There was always a piece left in all the sales books after you tore out the sales
