Just like he promised Mr. Williams came on Sunday afternoon and we went to Central Park. It was getting real hot now and so I didn't like very much to go to the animals but Mr. Williams bought me a book with pictures in of all the animals and he wrote on the cover To Mary May We Long Be Friends and May This Always Give Her Happy Memories. And he wrote it so nice even if it was in pencil and he tried to shade his writing like he does when he writes in ink. When I was cleaning the attic after Danny died on the electric chair and I had to move I found the book with all the pictures of the animals.
We went rowing on the lake but I was a little bit afraid and right at one place at the edge we found a duck sitting on a nest and Mr. Williams asked me how would I like to have a nest some day and I got all red and hot. We rowed for a while and then Mr. S'Villiams let the boat go by itself and he said oh Mary you are so sweet today. I wanted to tell him I thought he was wonderful but I didn't know how to say it.
I got to thinking we would be late for supper but Mr. Williams said no we must take a walk in the park first before going home. And so we walked very slowly and he put my hand on his hand and he kept patting my fingers where they weren't covered by the glove and his arm felt so strong to lean on and all of a sudden I got very bold and I told him how I thought his arm was so strong. I was glad I did because he was so pleased and he said he liked me because I was so timid and shy and I thought what a gentleman he was because the boys on the block used to call me scare cat.
