Mothers Cry

beau because the boys on the block were so rough and they only teased me. I was terribly excited and I kept thinking how I would see him all day long tomorrow in the store and it seemed so romantic. I could picture him selling some silk to some elegant lady and I would be watching him and thinking oh madam last night he called me Mary. And it seemed so wonderful it was like leading a double life.
When I was in the store the next day I told Fanny Benson about it but she giggled so much I felt she was spoiling it all. I thought it was too important for her to carry on like that. When Mr. Williams came over to my desk with his sales slip there was a customer with him and I gave him his change just like there was nothing at all between us but Mr. Williams looked at me and I looked at him and we knew what was between us but Fanny Benson touched my foot under the desk with hers and I wanted to laugh and that spoiled it. It was so exciting. I felt just like something so important had happened and it hadn't finished happening yet. I felt so glad all day and I was so happy and it seemed to me I was the luckiest girl in the world and I had never done anything to deserve so much. So when I got home that night I thought I ought to do something to show I was grateful and so I decided I would change the brush binding on my skirt because I always hated so to do it on account of having to handle the old binding so dirty from the streets and all but I thought now that I am Mr. Williams' friend I must have a fresh binding on the hem of my skirt and I said to myself that I would try harder now to hold my skirts up out of the dirt.
