CHAPTER 11 - LEADS

Callahan drew a deep breath.
" And you reckon this Quietta could have given you the dope ?" he asked Bill.
" Yes, I reckon so. I guess Tuck contacted him and arranged to meet him in the hills so he could bump him off. Too bad he got away." He paused and then added, " I want you to watch Rod. You can do it better than us. Keep tabs on him and let me know everythin' he does. Doc, I want you to check on the Reservation. Get all you can on Quietta-if he's gone back to the Reservation let me know. Get what you can on his pals. If we can get Quietta I guess we can finish this case. I got to leave Rod loose in the meantime, I got to have proof. If I arrest him now he may get out of it, and Tuck as well. I've heard lawyers cross-examinin'. A jury would give all these guys the benefit of the doubt right now."
He broke off, for there came a knock at the door. Bill unlocked it and there was Snake, the cow-hand who had fetched Callahan on the evening Rocky was abducted. Snake had news.
He'd been in the hills after some steers, reckoning that ranch business had to go on in spite of the fire. He'd gone early that morning, had just returned, knew nothing apparently of the latest developments.
" There's a shack a squatter used in the old days," he said, " it's about five miles from here, up in the hills. There's an Indian lyin' there wounded, a guy called Quietta. I found him-he said I was to contact you, ranger, tell you he'd talk for five hundred dollars. He says it's urgent. You're to get up there after dark. Guess I don't know what he means, but that's what he told me to get over to you. He wouldn't say nothin' else. But there's this-he's a no-good guy."
