CHAPTER 10 - THE TRAP

to lend a hand himself when a man stumbled into the glow thrown by the flames. Bill, swinging round, saw that it was Doc Grant, on foot. For a moment he thought he was the forerunner of the party bringing the prisoners from the hills, but then the Doc grabbed him and began to talk. Bill saw that he was in a bad way, swaying. One hand went to his head.
" I got somethin' for you, ranger," he rasped. " I've been here quite a while-I saw a guy ridin' down from the hills, followed him here-"
He swayed again and Bill put out a hand to support him. For the first time he realised that the Doc hadn't showed up when Tuck and the others were taken by the mesa. In the urgency of the moment Bill hadn't missed him.
" You followed a guy from the hills ? Did you see who it was ? "
" No-not until I got here, then I did. I guess he don't know that, though. He foxed me and laid up-then he got me, put me out." He stared past Bill to where the sheriff could be glimpsed still fighting the fire. " I want a few words with Rod Canter," he added. " He slugged me and I guess after that he fired the ranch."
Bill's eyes narrowed as he stared at the Doc, bareheaded, now without his spectacles.
" Rod slugged you ?" repeated Bill, " you sure of that ? "
" I'm sure, ranger. I saw him just before I passed out, and I guess my eyes are good enough-I only wear spectacles to make it look I'm a real schoolmaster." For a brief second the Doc managed a thin smile. Then he added, " I saw Rod, but I guess maybe he don't know I did."
Bill's grip tightened on the Doc's arm.
