CHAPTER 9 - ROCKY TAKES A HAND

but the fact that the boss was letting him go without attempting to stop him was good enough for Jake. Bill knew what he was doing.
Now others had penetrated to the hide-out. Jake transferred his speculative gaze to them. It looked as though this wasn't being the rangers' lucky morning. Three guys now knew that they were hiding away up here in the hills. Jake put his hand on his gun butt just in case of trouble, though he didn't reckon the boy would make any ; and Ned was behind Rocky and Grant, his gun in his hand. Still, Jake was being on the safe side.
Bill came forward to meet the newcomers, his thoughts somewhat similar to Jake's though not entirely, for he knew more. He knew that Pasco had tracked them to the hide-out using his uncanny, inborn skill, picking up the trail they had left when riding on the previous night to the holding. None but an Indian could have picked up the trail, Bill knew. Pasco had come silently, like a ghost. He had come as a friend.
Now others had come, Rocky and Doc Grant. Two unexpected developments had occurred one after the other. It looked as though Bill's plan to hide up would have to be abandoned. The luck wasn't on his side yet.
He came foward, but in spite of the complications posed by the arrival of these two visitors, part of his mind still dwelt on the Pasco development. What he now knew opened up possibilities. He was thinking, too, of the attack on White Eagle by the other Indian, of the furtive visit paid on the previous night to the Reservation three miles from Pasco's holding. There were possibilities, yes, but still Bill Rankin could not see his way.

But right now he must give his full attention to Rocky Bruce and Doc Grant.
" What are you doin' up here ?" he asked, coming up to them.
The Doc stared at Bill, then his eyes passed from him to Ned and Jake.
" I guess we can ask the same question," he stated flatly.
A brief smile touched Bill's lips. Sure, the same question could be asked, but that wasn't to say it would be answered.
" I guess you'd better talk first," he said quietly. " I've got authority to put it that way round," he added. " I reckon you both know I'm a ranger."
