CHAPTER 9 - ROCKY TAKES A HAND

" Who are you ?" he asked. And then, " What's the idea holdin' us up ? This is Indian Range territory."
Ned knew all about that.
" I guess you'd best come right in," he said softly. " Leave your beasts here, they'll be all right."
Rocky started in to argue, but the Doc stopped him.
" Do as he says, son-I guess he's not a hoodlum. Seems he's in with Rankin, and Rankin is a ranger."
They dismounted and walked through the gap, Ned behind them. Ned had dropped his gun to his side now, but he could use it quickly enough if necessary.
As they approached Bill and Pasco, the latter turned and looked at them, as inscrutably as always, his face showing no emotion. Then he turned back to Bill.
" I have said what I came to say," he stated. " I am grateful for what you did. White Eagle, too, is grateful."
With that he raised his hand in a salute strangely dignified in spite of shabby clothes so ill-becoming to this man of an alien race. Then he moved away, lightly, apparently unaware that Bill was armed and that Ned, too, had a gun ; or if he was aware he disregarded the possible menace.
Bill watched him go, made no move to stay him. Jake materialised- from behind some rocks and also watched him, jaws moving rhythmically as he chewed his quid. Pasco had pulled a fast one on the three rangers, appearing so suddenly at the hide-out that his coming had been unobserved and unheard even by Ned Duvene. Jake didn't know how he had trailed them to the cave or what he had said to Bill,
