CHAPTER 9 - ROCKY TAKES A HAND

He drew level after Rocky had reined in. The Doc began to speak but then broke off, following the direction of the boy's eyes. The Doc blinked, for he saw two men talking at the foot of a rearing cliff, behind them the opening to a cave. Both the men Grant recognised, even as Rocky had done. The boy had seen Bill Rankin only once, when he recovered consciousness for a few moments after Bill had met the Indian Range posse on the trail when he had been bringing the boy back from the hills two nights before. But he recognised him now. As for the other, it was Pasco, standing there talking to Bill.
So the ranger hadn't cleared, hadn't ridden to Phoenix as he had given out. He was up here in the hills-and with him now was Pasco !
Rocky pulled back his pony to get out of sight, but as he did so a voice spoke behind him.
" Guess you're a long way from home, son."
Rocky and the Doc swung round in the saddles. Behind them stood a dark, lean man, a gun in his hand. It was Ned Duvene, who had watched them coming but had been unable in the time to warn Bill. The unexpected arrival of the young Indian Pasco, who had taken the rangers by surprise, coming so silently and skilfully, had diverted Ned's attention, with the result that he hadn't got on to Rocky and the Doc until it was too late. Now they had seen Bill. Ned reckoned they might as well see him, too, the real damage already being done. Ned didn't reckon that Bill would want them returning to Black Creek to open their mouths about seeing the ranger up here in the hills hiding away.
Neither Rocky nor the Doc had seen Ned before. The Doc blinked behind his spectacles. Rocky stared.
