CHAPTER 9 - ROCKY TAKES A HAND

When they had gone, passing beyond the outcrop, not giving it another look, Rocky said as much to the Doc. The latter nodded slowly.
" Sure, I guess so." Then abruptly, " Maybe we'll leave the sheriff out after all, son. It'd be too bad if you were right and he slipped the word to Tuck. We got to spring a trap up here, I guess, then there won't be any mystery left, not if we grab the guys rustlin' your beasts-we don't want anythin' to go wrong. O.K. we'll get back to Indian Range and talk to your father."
They set off, first making sure that Tuck and Jeb were out of the way. They rode silently, each absorbed in his thoughts. Rocky reckoned Tuck and Jeb had given themselves away being up here just after Bud, no doubt under orders, had hidden the wire. He only hoped that he himself and the Doc hadn't said anything to make the crooks suspicious that they knew too much. If so the trap couldn't succeed.
They were still deep in the hills when away in the distance Rocky saw a man just for a few brief seconds silhouetted in a gap in the outcrops. Then he was gone, but the boy was dead sure the figure had been that of an Indian-maybe Pasco the Apache. He couldn't be sure, but he was going to find out. This wasn't the first time he had seen Pasco up here on Indian Range territory, lurking about furtively.
The boy pulled in, staring at the distant gap. The Doc tried to persuade him to carry on for the ranchhouse, but Rocky wasn't having any.
" I'm goin' to have a look," he muttered, and was moving towards the gap before the Doc could argue. The schoolmaster followed, but didn't catch up with the boy until the gap was reached.
