CHAPTER 9 - ROCKY TAKES A HAND

" What you doin' up here ?" he demanded.
As he spoke his eyes, Rocky noted, went beyond him-to the outcrop where the wire was hidden. Then he stared at Rocky again, repeating his question.
Rocky's hands clenched on the reins.
" I got more right than you to be here," he replied. " This is our territory."
Jeb Schultz drew back his lips at this, but then the Doc came round the corner. Whatever Jeb had been about to say he cut short. His narrow face grew suddenly blank, withdrawn.
Tuck nodded at the Doc. Then he spoke again to Rocky.
" I reckoned you were still laid up, kid," he said more pleasantly than Rocky had ever heard him talk. " Guess I'm glad you got out o' your trouble O.K."
" Sure, so am I, and his pop," the Doc broke in.
Tuck tilted his Stetson back on his head. He was making an obvious effort to appear friendly, in itself suspicious. Then Jeb spoke.
" What happened to you ?" he asked. " Guess all we know is you were slugged-didn't you get a sight of the guys who laid for you ?"
" No, I don't know anythin' except I was laid out and taken somewhere, I don't know where, an' then the ranger got me away," replied Rocky.
" Too bad," muttered Tuck. " And I guess it's a pity the ranger's cleared-they tell me he's gone back to Phoenix. You don't know nothin' else about what happened to you ? "
Again Rocky denied any knowledge ; but he was watching Tuck and Jeb closely. They were mighty anxious to find out just what he did know and had reported. The boy didn't reckon they were just being friendly for a change. They were anxious.
