CHAPTER 9 - ROCKY TAKES A HAND

Rocky had talked about trailing him and Pasco.
Spike Borden didn't know what Rocky had reported-he hadn't been told. The Doc had been told after Spike had gone. Spike couldn't have dropped the word, therefore, but just the same Tuck might know, and as a result might lay off now, not try any more rustling. And what about the sheriff ? His insistence that nothing should be said about Rocky trailing Tuck and Pasco might be a blind ; he might have warned Tuck. Rocky was still in the state of mistrusting almost everyone. Anyway, the point was that Tuck might not try anything else until the upset following Rocky's abduction had died down.
The Doc listened to this frowning and then shook his head.
" The wire has just been hidden," he said. " That indicates rustlin' is planned right away. As for what you say about Rod, I guess that's all hay-wire, lad. The sheriff must be O.K."
He broke off, for in the distance two riders had come into view, moving down the trail towards the Doc and Rocky. The leader was Tuck Werner ; with him was Jeb Schultz.
" Get movin'," snapped the Doc. " They'll maybe get suspicious if they find us right here."
This made sense, for Tuck and Jeb, coming from that direction, would certainly see the two under cover near the outcrop. It was better to meet them farther along the trail, appear to be hereabouts with no specific purpose.
They met Tuck and Jeb face to face round a bend in the trail three hundred yards from the outcrop ; or rather Rocky met them, for the Doc had dropped back when his pony stumbled.
Tuck pulled up on seeing Rocky.
