CHAPTER 8 - NEW MOVES

another pony, had heard that Tuck had one for sale.
" I'd have talked to Jeb about it down at the hotel yesterday evenin'," he added, " but then the Rocky Bruce business broke an' I had to clear. A bad business that," he added.
Tuck Werner said nothing, not on that subject. He had a pony for sale ; he knew that Callahan made a good thing out of the hotel. The latter could read his thoughts, could guess that he was working out how much he could make on the pony.
" Sure, I got a good animal," said Tuck at last. " It'll cost you plenty," he added. " Sure, Pinto is a good beast."
At that Bud broke in.
" Hey, you ain't goin' to sell Pinto ? You said I could reckon on him bein' mine-yesterday evenin' you said that, when you took him out . . . you said "
Tuck turned on the boy with a snarl.
" Awl shut up-get goin', this is business. I don't want you hangin' around."
Bud was ferocious enough, but he quailed before Tuck's glare. He muttered and then shuffled off. As he did so Jeb Schultz came across the corral.
Callahan kept quiet, but he was thinking. So Tuck had been out on the previous evening. That might mean nothing-but when Bud had let it out Tuck had rounded on him. Well, that might mean nothing either ; it might be that Tuck was angry at being reminded of a promise he now wanted to revoke. Or it might not.
Jeb came across and Tuck turned to him.
" Guess Mister Callahan is thinkin' o' buyin' Pinto," he said. " Lucky I didn't lose him to you at poker last night, Jeb." He turned back to Callahan.
