up here tonight. After leaving Indian Range earlier, when he was sure that Rocky was all right, he had seen somebody riding towards the ranch. It was Spike Borden. Spike didn't see Callahan, who not knowing where he was going, followed along. He saw Spike enter the ranch-house, hung around waiting and later saw Spike leave.
" I trailed him, bein' mighty interested in Spike, but I lost him. He turned off the trail between the ranch-house and the Black Creek trail. I scouted around but I didn't find him-an' then after a longish while I heard shots."

He put his hand in his pocket and brought out a sheath knife. On the butt was a mark that Bill, peering at it in the rapidly fading light of the moon, could distinguish. The design was cut in the wood, a diamond enclosed in a square frame.
" Sure, this was dropped by somebody from the Block Diamond," said Callahan. " I found it on the other side of the Indian Range trail, near a rock we call the Steeple. I reckon the shots I heard came from just about there. Maybe Spike was shootin' for fun, but maybe not. I've been scoutin' around sincethen I saw you guys, an' the rest you know." He paused and then added, " I was goin' to tell you
