CHAPTER 7 - RECRUITED

" What are you doin' here ?" he asked.
" Lookin' around-I told you, I want to talk to you. It's time I came clean, I guess. I was savin' it up for tomorrow, but then I kinda struck a trail after leavin' Indian Range, and that makes it I've got to talk right away. I didn't reckon on findin' you here, but now I have, this is as good a time as any to talk."
Ned and Jake waited for Bill to take the lead as they always did. He stared at Callahan and then indicated the hide-out amongst the rocks.
" Come over here," he said.
The group moved back to the hide-out, Ned being careful to keep Callahan covered. The latter, however, didn't seem to notice this, or if he did not to worry about it.
When they were under cover Bill spoke again.
" O.K., Callahan, what's the tale ?"
The man squatted down on a sloping rock. He rubbed a slim hand over his jaw, seemed entirely at ease.
" Before I get to that," he replied, " I'd like to get somethin' else clear. My guess is you're all rangers. I know you are, Rankin, you said so-these are your buddies ? Sure-this evenin' when these two guys came to the hotel I knew I'd seen him before," indicating the silent Jake, " but I couldn't rightly remember where. But when you came out that you were a ranger the bell rang. I saw you," looking at Jake again, "'way back a couple o' years ago, an' you were on ranger's business then."
Jake said nothing, again leaving it to Bill. The latter didn't see any point in denying the facts. This Callahan had enough to be sure of them, anyway. Bill still didn't know what he was doing up here, but
