CHAPTER 6 - RENDEZVOUS

seemed to Bill the best move to lie up. If rangers were known to be in the district, the enemy might well call a halt and retreat under cover. If they thought the coast was clear they would probably continue. There must be a strong motive for the war against Indian Range.
It would be easy enough to lie up in the foothills. To lie up-and watch. Bill reckoned it was the best move, and his friends agreed. In any case they always left decisions to Bill.
" O.K. then," said the ranger. " I guess you and Jake had better get back to the hotel, otherwise it might look kinda funny, Ned. If you can work it nobody sees you that'll be fine, but if not you've been lookin' around the place. If Canter gets on to you say nothin', make out you're ridin' to Phoenix. He's O.K. but I don't aim to let anyone know we're stayin' on. Tomorrow mornin' get movin' like you were makin' for Phoenix, but then double back. We'll arrange a rendezvous-"
He broke off, for Ned Duvene had come lithely to his feet, was standing motionless, one hand up in a signal for silence. His head was turned towards the south and he was listening.
Then he spoke softly.
" Somebody comin'-leave it to me."
Silently he slid away and was gone, a shadow moving without a sound. Bill and Jake stayed where they were, guns ready. They couldn't compete with Ned when it came to scouting.
They waited under cover, hearing not a soundbut this didn't mean anything. They had learned to trust Ned's instinct and his keen ears implicitly. If he wanted them he would find a way of letting them know.

CHAPTER 6 - RENDEZVOUS

Five minutes passed, and then they did hear something. There came the scrape of hooves and away to their right appeared the figure of a rider, silhouetted against the sinking moon. He saw the two rangers, pulled up sharply and grabbed for his gun.
As he did so a second figure materialised behind him, a figure on foot. It was Ned Duvene, who must have been trailing him.
There was a swift flurry of movement. The man's gun was wrenched from his grasp and he was swung off his pony, the attack so unexpected that the guy hadn't a chance.
He was thrust from the saddle and half fell, reeling. As he recovered, swung round, Ned spoke, his own gun in his hand covering the man.
" Take it easy-I've got you cold."
