CHAPTER 6 - RENDEZVOUS

Rocky didn't learn much, didn't get any evidence, not concrete evidence. Maybe it was thought he had. I didn't talk to the boy, but accordin' to Bruce he only got that Tuck and Pasco rode off together towards the holdin', and I should say Bruce is tellin' the truth, no reason why he shouldn't. There are several hoodlums in this, there were three, you reckon, at least, with the kid, maybe more. But there'll be one guy in charge, I guess, givin' the orders. He might not have been with the boy all the time-he might have been the hoodlum who laid for me later, I wouldn't know. I reckon there are plenty of questions-let's work out the timin'."
They did that. Of those in whom the rangers were particularly interested Jeb Schultz, alias Schy Hunt, Spike Borden of the Block Diamond, Tuck Werner, the Indian Pasco and his old grandfather White Eagle-it was definite that Jeb and Spike had been unobserved for a long time during the evening, after they had left the hotel. It was possible, therefore, that either or both had been implicated in the Rocky affair. Jeb could have been coming back from Pasco's holding when first seen by the two rangers ; he could have returned there after leaving the hotel. It was not known what Spike was doing before he arrived at Black Creek with Jeb ; but he, too, could have ridden into the hills after leaving the hotel. Either or both could have been with the boy when Ned and Jake intervened.
Tuck Werner and the Indian Pasco had last been seen by Rocky in the afternoon near the holding. After that nothing was, as yet, known of their movements. They could also have been implicated, in fact the odds were heavily in favour of this theory.
