CHAPTER 3 - STRANGERS AT BLACK CREEK

Callahan started to say something else, but at that moment the swing doors burst open and a man entered abruptly, a cow-hand judging from his clothes. He saw Callahan and came swiftly across to him.
" I got a message from old man Bruce," he said.
" A message, Snake ? What is it ?"
" The old man's all het-up," was the reply. " The kid hasn't showed up from school. I've been down to the joint, but it's all shut up, nobody there. I was told to ask you if you could come up to Indian Rangeguess you know what the old man's like over the kid. Maybe he's just gone off on his own, but Bruce ain't happy. He reckons somethin' has happened to him."
Callahan frowned.
" Rocky ain't turned up yet ? That ain't like him. O.K. I'll come along."
He turned to Jake and Ned but only for a moment. " I've got to go," he muttered. " I'll be seein' you later."
With that he strode away. A few minutes later the two rangers saw him riding from the hotel with the cow-hand Snake. There was a good view of Main Street from the window by which Ned and Jake were sitting.
Jake got up and Ned followed. They walked across to the bar, to where Jeb and the man Spike were still standing.
" Seems like there's trouble up at the joint you call Indian Range," said Jake to Jeb, fishing for information. " There's a kid missin' or somethin'-Mister Callahan has gone up there. He was tellin' us a bit before that Indian Range has had its share o' trouble this last year."
Jeb Schultz stuck his hands in his gun-belt.
