CHAPTER 2 - INDIAN TRAIL

The figure passed by him, moved out of sight, out of his range. Then from behind him hands gripped his head, forced open his jaws and before he could make any attempt to struggle something was poured down his throat, something that burned his mouth, bitter and distasteful.
He tried to avoid swallowing the stuff but his head was held in an iron grasp, tilted back at an angle. He was forced to swallow-and within a matter of moments unconsciousness swept over him again. For the second time Rocky Bruce plunged into the abyss of darkness and pain.
He knew nothing of what happened after that, did not know that when it was certain he had lost consciousness a light was lit and into the small, windowless room came a white man, who stared down at him and then at the silent Indian who stood by the boy's side.
" He's out ?" asked the white. " You're sure ?"
" I am sure-he will not recover for an hour. Do with him what you like."
The other nodded. He knew something of the potions brewed by the Apache Indians, knew that they were always effective.
" All right, we get him out of here, then, up into the hills."
The Indian, arms folded across his chest beneath his blanket, spoke again. His face remained unmoving.
" He knows too much, this boy ?"
The white man did not reply directly.
" I'm dealin' with him," he said briefly. " You got the horses ready ? O.K, let's go."
The Indian bent and lifted the unconscious boy without difficulty, apparently without effort. Ten minutes later Rocky was slung across the saddle of a

led horse. He was taken through the darkness towards the high mountains. There were others present as well as the man who had given the orders, others who rode beside the prisoner.
The little cavalcade pushed deep into the foothills, making towards the mountains, though in fact the leader intended to halt before reaching them.
Rocky knew nothing of any of this. He knew nothing until he came to himself much later, the air cool on his face. He was lying on rough ground against a boulder, wrists and ankles bound. Now the moon shimmered over the barren desolation of the hills and the outcrops, rendering the wastes even more sinister and evil.
