CHAPTER 1 - BLACK CREEK FEUD

had ridden along the trail towards the ranch-house or had turned off amongst the outcrops.
He had done neither. He was off his pony, standing talking to Pasco, the Indian. The latter had his pony tethered nearby. The two were talking, and though Rocky could not hear what they said, it was evident that the talk was friendly.
Then, as Rocky watched, another figure came into view, cutting on to the trail from the south, coming from amongst the outcrops. It was the burly, thickset Tuck Werner himself. He saw the other two and raised his hand in greeting. Rocky realised that he was not surprised to see them. He realised, too, that like Bud, the man was greeting the Indian in friendship.
Rocky's eyes narrowed. So much for the belief that there was enmity between the Indian and the Bar-20. Rocky stayed where he was, himself unseen. He watched Tuck Werner swing out of the saddle and approach the others leading his pony, his other hand ostentatiously well away from his gun, a sure sign that this was a friendly meeting.
