Prologue

IT was night, with no moon to light the solitudes of this Arizona territory lying in the shadow of the mighty mountains. The grazing-grounds, the pasture of poor quality, arid and stony, lay silently. A small wind came from the mountains, brooding as they had done for aeons of time, before even the red men set foot here, long before the whites came.
Rising from rocky ground amongst the foothills of the mountains bubbled a small spring, which coming to the surface of the ground gushed into a narrow channel which led it away down the slope towards the grazing grounds. The channel rapidly widened until by the time it reached the grounds it was a small river. It watered the grounds on this side of the ranch, though poorly, for the volume of the water was not sufficient for more than a few hundred head of cattle. Water was a problem which affected all the ranches in this territory, though none more than this ranch.
Tonight, overlaying the noise of the water bubbling from the spring, there presently came another noise, of horse's hooves approaching. They drew nearer and
