contemporaries knew anything about family finances. When Marian's roommate at college lost her father, the estate, burdened with debts, left the family practically penniless. "If we had known the real condition of Dad's affairs," the girl said bitterly, "we could have cut down expenses long ago. The money we spent for mourning alone would have rented a small apartment for a year."
Why should family money matters be such mysteries?
Well, in the first place, no one likes to discuss the unpleasant possibility of death. This reluctance amounts almost to a taboo. Then again, the average man isn't too efficient about his personal affairs. Usually he merely gambles on living until his children are self-supporting.
A third reason is the work involved. Before our first Family Session, Dan worked for days preparing a statement of our affairs, scheming how to give us a sense of economic reality without spoiling the children's youth and joy, without making them think that money is the only gauge.
Our Family Sessions have meant unremitting work, with long hours of teaching the children and ourselves the management of money. But they have also meant peace of mind, confidence in the future. We haven't lived very differently from our friends. We've had debts and illnesses and ups and downs like everyone else, but we have been fortified by the knowledge that all five members of the family were cooperating to meet these emergencies. Best of all, we have given our children, by experience, an economic training with which to face the hazards of the world.
