Family Session, Inc.

A family vote each month on expenditures is good training for the children and invaluable in balancing the budget

YEARS AGO, one of our close friends died suddenly, in mid-career. My husband, Dan, was executor of his estate and one evening he said to me: "I've been looking into Steve's affairs: his house is mortgaged, there are unpaid installments on his car, he borrowed on his insurance to send his son to college. It's the sort of thing any man does, of course, and Steve would have come out all right if he'd lived. But now I've got to tell Helen that she must support herself. She'll have to give up her house and her boy must leave school."
The picture shocked me beyond measure. I suddenly realized that beyond the amount of Dan's salary I knew little of his affairs. I didn't know how much money he owed, whether the car was paid for, or even the terms of his will.
Some weeks later, after we had discussed the situation at length, Dan called the children and me into the dining room. On the table lay a pile of papers. Then he took up the problem of our future.
"We're going to form a family business," he explained, "with all matters of policy and expenditure decided by vote. Once a month we'll hold a business meeting. You children are to have as much to say about the spending of my salary as your mother and I. We'll call our business `Family Session, Inc.'
"If I should die tonight, you would have less than an eighth of our present income-far less than you need for the necessities of life. With careful planning I can leave you with about a quarter of the income we now have. But it will mean cutting down all round, so that we can carry more insurance."
