THE KINGDOM OF GOD

an end to this setting as it once caused the trees of the Bois to vanisha Will Rockefeller Centre and the Empire State ascend into the flies? Will the fragile and precarious existence that we have so painfully constructed during this year collapse like the one that formerly seemed to us so substantial? And what shall we see when the footlights come up again, if ever they do come up? No one knows. But timidly, anxiously, ardently we hope that it may be noble and lovely Perigord, a 'long valley lined with poplars, the red roofs of the farm at Brouillac lighted by the setting sun, and when the night shall come, in a French sky above the plane trees and the cedars, familiar constellations which French voices will call by name in the most beautiful of languages.
New York City 8 October, 1941

Circumstances have decreed that this book should not be published until more than a year after its completion. During that time, the wheels of Time have turned, the United States has entered the war, the lights of New York have been dimmed, following those of Paris and London. The dark shadow which envelops the earth has united us across the oceans. But now, on the fringes of this night, it is possible to perceive the light of dawn. The giant forces of America are made up: not only of plants, planes and tanks, but of courage and of faith. In hoc signo vinces.
