BROTHER AGAINST BROTHER

When we think of the great power and influence which this country exercises we cannot look back with much pleasure on our foreign policy in the last five years . . . We have pressed upon France a policy of sanctions against Italy that is estranging these two countries. ... The friendship between France and Italy was vital to the defence and security of every home in France, and France out of regard for Britain and out of loyalty to the principle of the League of Nations went very far, and considerable injury was inevitable in the relations of France and Italy ... In this island - where we are still blessed by being surrounded by a strip of salt water, in spite of the alterations which later developments have caused - we ought to be careful that in our interventions in the foreign sphere we understand fully the consequences they may bring to those who live upon the continent, and the feelings which they may create there.

After this the premonitory tremors grew more frequent. When I went to London in February 1936 after the death of George V to deliver his funeral eulogy before a Franco-English Society, the chairman, Sir Austen Chamberlain, expressed his fears to me.
