BROTHER AGAINST BROTHER

I did not draw the conclusion from this example that I should affiliate myself with a party, but rather that I should give up action, preserve a writer's freedom of expression and wait for the French to come to understand, as I had done, that by being disunited they were disarmed.
For a time I believed I had found another form of action, that of journalism. The Figaro, which had for a while followed a policy contrary to its tradition, had just been bought by M. and Mde Leon Cotnareanu. It was their intention to bring the paper back to i'ts traditional mission: objectivity in politics and an intelligent leadership in literature and art. Pierre Brisson suggested to Leon Cotnareanu an editorial committee of five, of which I would be a member. Cotnareanu agreed and I was strongly attracted by the idea of working with friends for whose intelligence and honesty I had a high regard. Moreover my wife was delighted to see me join a paper for which her father had written and which had been edited by Robert de Flers. But I was neglecting two important facts. The first was that a committee cannot run anything. In a newspaper, as in a factory or government, there is need of a prime minister.
The second fact was my own character. I have tried a hundred times in my life to participate in a committee, a group or a council. Almost always after a short time I have had to resign because of my desire to have them act or write otherwise than they did. In my youth I was efficient as a manufacturer because I was master in my own domain and responsible for my own decisions; I had been efficient in various capacities in the army because my situation, though a subordinate one, was perfectly definite; but I am inept at politics and at collective action. For consolation I tell myself that a writer is a being who should act alone and not sign anything except what he himself has written. But I know that lack of aptitude for team work is one of my weaknesses. After one year I resigned from the editorial committee of Figaro: naturally I remained on very intimate terms with the paper for which I continued to write.

Meanwhile the foreign danger was increasing. I was in Paris when the Hoare-Laval agreement was torpedoed by English public opinion. There was one man in the British Parliament who emphatically denounced the rashness of a policy that combined intransigent principles and inefficient armaments. That man was Winston Churchill. And this is what he said:
