THE Berlin-Vienna express roared its way furiously through the dark night, its long, dimly-lit coaches swaying dangerously from side to side. Two men, however, travelling in the `wagon lit' were much too engrossed in their conversation to notice anything. Even in the seclusion of their double berth, amid the noise of the rattling train, they spoke in low whispers. It was evident that what they had to say needed the greatest secrecy and caution. ... They were working out the final details of a scheme they had embarked upon ... and men's lives were trembling in the balance !
" It is wonderful the way he has worked it all out," said one, referring to some notes he had in front of him.
" Well, mon ami," replied the other, "if he doesn't know his way about-no one else does!"
" But what is his motive?" asked the first one thoughtfully. "How is it all going to help him?"
" It is not for us to ask," was the answer. "He is paying well for it."
" It's all right for you," the first man whispered tensely. "You haven't to fire the shot."
" Easy, easy, mon camerade," said the other soothingly. "If your shot misses, I am to fire too. So we are both in the same boat!"
The first man was trembling now with suppressed excitement.
" I fear that man," he whispered, with a nervous look around the little compartment. It was as though
