THE NET CLOSES

Ivan (we believed it was you, of course) that I could not fathom. He was so different from the `you' I had seen at the ball in the previous week. Then, down by the river at the races, I could see that something was wrong. It was all intuition, of course-I had absolutely nothing to go on. Then on the night of the Trinity Ball I was sure. Ajax must not mind if I say how I knewI know he will forgive me. But you were so cold; you never attempted to make love to me as you had done before. ... I knew that things were different. But it was really your eyes that gave you away."
" My eyes?" asked the Prince wonderingly.
" Yes," laughed Veronica, whilst Ajax writhed in his chair. " I saw a tiny light brown speck in yours, that night in the conservatory at home. But it had gone by the light of the fairy lantern we stood beneath at Trinity, a week or so afterwards."
" Is it there now? " Carl asked innocently.
" Yes it is," laughed Veronica, with a wicked gleam in her own eye.
" And there it stays," said Ajax firmly, grasping her by the wrist and pulling her towards him. She did not struggle any more than a graceful surrender demanded ; and he kissed her before them all l But such was the excitement of the situation that Veronica forgave him !
" And now, how are we all to get away from here," asked Bunny. "Do you think you could find the way to that room where the secret door is? "
" Oh yes ! " assured Veronica.
" But how are we to get out of here? " asked Carl. " We are locked in ! "
" Well, you three will have to set on that man when he comes to see you in the morning," said Veronica boldly.
