REUNION

THE passage was very much longer than she had expected ; and several times she fell down as her feet caught the heaps of fallen debris from the roof. Soon she began to wonder what she had undertaken. Where would the tunnel lead out-what would be at the end of it? Poor Yolanda! In her preoccupation she had entirely forgotten her! Thank goodness she had stayed behind! But Veronica realised that it would be quite as bad to go back as to go forward now, for she must surely be near the end of the tunnel. Just as she was beginning to think that there was no end, and that she was really just wandering round and round the foundations of the rambling old mill in some way or other, she found herself in the square chamber which held the door.
