CHAPTER XXIV
IMPORTANT THREADS

WHEN Royston felt the cold waters of the Danube close over him, he thought that all was over. The paralysis which had been creeping through his nervous system and killing all power of movement had almost completed its work. It had taken him all he knew to reach up and open the window. In fact, it was his total collapse that thrust open the casement as his body fell against it. Still, his brain had never wavered once during this horrible experience ; and it rose to the rescue now. Instinctively he had taken a deep breath as he fell down towards the water and this brought him to the top very quickly. Straightening his limbs with a mighty effort he rolled over on to his back in a floating position. He found with deep relief that the cold water was acting as a temporary stimulant, and with great strain he was just able to keep his head out of the water. But the old deadly cramp soon started again, and this time his consciousness began to fail him. It seemed to him that the end was near, and the swift stream was carrying him on towards the eternal ocean. Then suddenly his head hit something ; instinctively his muscles responded to the final effort he put on them ; and he hooked a stiffened arm through the rusty chain that scraped his face. That last effort of consciousness saved him; for he was found there with hooked arms, his head just clear of the swirling water, by a police boat half an hour later.
