He forced his stiffening muscles to do their utmost. He did not try to ask `why' he did it. He knew that in his present condition he would never be able to swim, even if he got outside the window.
It took him all his time to force his hand up to the handle of the window bolt-only to find that he could not grip it. One more desperate battle with this stiffening horror that had him in a python-like grip.... At last it turned. ...
