CHAPTER XXIII
VIENNA

HE arrived in Vienna without any further incident. There he found that he had a long wait of some four hours. At first he was somewhat dismayed at the prospect of hanging about the great Bahnhoff, with its dingy glass roof and smoky walls. Then a happy thought struck him (at least he thought it happy-it turned out to be something very much in the nature of a catastrophe!). He decided to renew an old acquaintance with the city.
A year or so ago he had spent a few very happy weeks there, and his recollections of the place were very pleasant. Nothing loth, he delivered his kit into the care of a convenient official and sauntered forth. It was getting dusk and near to dinner time. He well remembered the Rosenhoff, that small but exclusive restaurant just off the Strasse Imperator, and he decided to turn his steps in that direction. Their famous `Plat' was a marvellous concoction of sole cooked in a casserole with mushrooms and grated cheese-and his mouth watered as he thought of it. Yes ! he would dine there ; there was just sufficient time. But, first of all (he thought) an aperitif was indicated! Lights were winking their way into life every moment, as he sat there at the little table on the pavement beneath the lime trees. It was all so different from London-so free and easy. Life flitted along on airy wings here in Vienna, to the strains of stringed orchestras and merry laughter. Royston felt
