TRAPPED!

"Let's see," answered Bunny. Suiting the action to the word, he pushed the other end downwards, and the stone stood straight up-revealing a flight of old steps, which crumbled away into the darkness below.
" Well, that's all right, so far," said Ajax. "But it would be very foolish to go down there without a light."
" I've got plenty of matches," cried Bunny, not to be put off.
" All right," said Ajax in a resigned tone. " I believe," he added slowly, "that I saw a candle upstairs beside that bed. I'll go and get it."
" Hurry up then," answered Bunny shaking the box of matches eagerly.
He dashed back through the two gloomy rooms to the stairs. It was much darker up here, and he had to grope about for a few moments before he found the candle. He noticed with delight that it was a good long one. All the same, he did not relish this adventure very much. It was so obvious that there was something sinister and evil behind all this mystery. He felt that Bunny's silly idea was going to lead to trouble. Thoughtfully, he hurried on his way, determined to persuade his friend to give it up. Bunny could be very obstinate at times, and he felt doubtful that he would succeed. Suddenly he noticed how quiet it was ! Not a sound came from the dimly lighted rooms below.
" Bunny," he cried, descending the last step of the ladder. " I say ! Come here!"
His voice echoed curiously about the walls of the mill, but he got no answer from Bunny. A sudden fear gripped his heart and it began to beat furiously. The place felt horribly empty. Had something happened?
