CHAPTER XXI
TRAPPED!

FOR a moment the two friends stood silently watching the police car as it disappeared into the distance. Then suddenly Bunny seized the arm of his companion.
" Come on," he cried dragging him back to the mill.
" Here! What's up," protested Ajax.
" Come and see," the other answered excitedly.
He led the way back to the room where they had left the body. Over at the other side was the old fireplace of the mill, with an open hearth for burning logs on. They had not explored it before, on account of finding the body lying in their path. This old hearth was stone paved.
" Look here," cried Bunny. "I noticed it whilst that beastly policeman was slanging us."
He showed the astonished Ajax a big stone of some four by three feet square. It was quite easy to see that this stone was balanced on a swivel bar which went through the centre ; for one end was sticking up about two inches out of the floor, whilst the other end was two inches below it ! This was a tremendous discovery ! They looked at each other in a thrill of excitement.
" What are we to do?" asked Ajax.
" Explore," was the brief answer.
" Yes, but what will we find behind that stone?" protested Ajax.
