HOW THE RING GOT THERE

"Then that's all right," was the unspoken thought of the bearded man. "It's still working." But he did not say what he meant ; that was kept locked up in his evil mind, part of his horrible plan. Then suddenly, for a second time while they stood there talking, he looked the young man straight in the eyes. What there was to be seen in them will never be known ; but the other staggered back as if from a blow. The physical result was just as though such a blow had actually been struck, for he collapsed in a heap at the feet of the stranger ; and the ring rolled away, unnoticed by either of them, to the place where (as we have seen) Bunny found it next day.
A look of annoyance and anxiety came over the elder man's face. He had not expected this to happen. It alarmed him. He began to realise that the power of his `will' was much more effective than he had suspected. He had never experienced any difficulty in controlling it before, when he had used it; but then, he reflected, he had never tackled so delicate a subject as this. The beautifully poised and delicately nurtured brain of this young man, the product of heredity, evidently needed much more careful handling than those of the others he had experimented on. Indeed, the more he considered it, the more anxious he became. He did not wish to permanently injure the young fellow-that was not in his calculations. ... At least not yet awhile. ... He would need that brain later. . . .
