THE MILL

asked Bunny, making a bee line for one that looked easy.
Ajax looked about him in dismay. Things were moving too rapidly to suit him !
" Hi! Bunny," he suddenly whispered tensely. " Wait ! "
But it was too late, the catch had already answered to the gentle pressure of Bunny's knife blade and, at that moment, sprang back with a loud click !
" Now you've done it," said Ajax. "There's already been somebody here! Look at those potatoes. Someone has been digging there-you can see the moist earth."
" Go on! " scoffed Bunny, who had come back at the urgent appeal of his friend. " You ought to be a detective ! Why it's only been someone like ourselves-robbing the garden ! "
He turned back to the window and gently raised the lower half.
" Aren't you coming?" he asked with one leg half over the sill.
" Of course," Ajax replied in an injured tone. "You don't think I'd funk it, do you? "
He slowly reached over the sill and followed Bunny.
At first (coming in as they did, out of the brilliant sunshine) they found it very dark inside ; but gradually they got accustomed to the gloomy interior. Here and there, chinks of light pierced the darkness ; and they could see the old beams stretching across the roof, and a maze of rusty machinery in the centre of the floor. Festooned though it was with great spiders' webs, it was still quite easy to make out the different purposes of the primitive corn crusher.
" I wonder what is upstairs," said the adventurous Bunny.
