MURDER

How, as he lay there sleeping, the sun tinted arm of the Prince would gently hang over the edge of the bed in perfect contentment and rest. How this fiend in human form would stand there, fascinated by the strongly moulded limb-gloating over his opportunity. There would be the prick of the needle of death, and all would be over! . .. But against this theory Royston recalled the look of horror that showed on the face of the dead man. Could he have awakened after all? Had he been stung to consciousness by the prick of the needle and opened his eyes to see his murderer standing there ; and in the second's pause as he hovered between life and death his face had registered his emotion-then the fatal poison had done its evil work and frozen the young body in the muscular reflexes of paralysis and death? Oh! it was horrible. Royston shivered at the thought. But his reconstruction of the tragedy seemed to have described the case ; there had been no signs of a struggle of any sort. How terrible it must have been. He began to wonder now, who was it that the young man feared so much that just an awakening glance would fill with abject terror-even before he realised that the man was his murderer ... if he ever realised it at all! Surely not Ivan! But if not Ivan then who?
This cruel, calculating, unscrupulous man was the one Royston had to find ; and he registered a vow on the spot, that one day he would find him, and bring him to justice!

About this time, a man and a woman were sitting together in the garden of a big hotel near Brighton. The woman was swinging idly in a big hammock chair

swung beneath a sheltering tree. The sun was very warm, and its rays are devastating to a complexion comprised of milk and roses !
" I'm afraid he's going to give us too much trouble," the man was saying. "If he doesn't settle down soon I'll have to revert to my original plan."
" And what was that plan," asked the woman, languidly stretching out a tapering hand for a cigarette from the box near by. She gave a little shriek of horror at his reply-for he turned his thumbs downwards, as the Roman Emperors used to do in gladiatorial days.
